Karachi to Get Specialized Parks for Differently-Abled Individuals
To enhance inclusivity and empower individuals with disabilities, the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has revealed an ambitious initiative to establish four specialized parks throughout the city. This visionary endeavor, generously funded by the Sindh government in collaboration with the Centre for Autism Rehabilitation Training (CARTS), seeks to create dedicated recreational spaces to meet the unique needs of people with disabilities.
In a recent gathering at the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (DEPD) office, Mayor Karachi, Barrister Murtaza Wahab, reiterated KMC's unwavering commitment to improving the quality of life for individuals with disabilities. It was announced that the proposed parks would be entrusted to the DEPD, ensuring their transformation into fully accessible and inclusive environments.
The meeting brought together esteemed dignitaries, including the Secretary of DEPD, the Municipal Commissioner of KMC, Syed Afzal Zaidi, and the Director General of Parks, KMC. The Secretary DEPD passionately implored the mayor to allocate dedicated recreational areas within KMC parks, underlining the pressing need for facilities catering specifically to the unique requirements of Karachi's disabled community.
In response to this heartfelt appeal, financial provisions have been earmarked in the Annual Development Programme (ADP) for the renovation of four parks during the current fiscal year. These parks include Malir Saudia Park, Landhi Imran Shaheed Park, Family Park North Karachi, and Kashmir Road Park, with the latter poised to serve as a pioneering model for inclusivity in Karachi.
Mayor Wahab has instructed the Director General of Parks to work closely with the Secretary of DEPD, facilitating on-site visits to KMC parks. This collaborative effort represents a significant stride towards realizing a more inclusive Karachi, one that caters to the diverse needs of all its residents.
